“When they entered, they found hanging upon the wall a splendid portrait of their master as they had last seen him, in all the wonder of his exquisite youth and beauty. Lying on the floor was a dead man, in evening dress, with a knife in his heart. He was withered, wrinkled, and loathsome of visage. It was not till they had examined the rings that they recognized who it was.”

The Picture of Dorian Gray explores the human condition in a darker and unconventional tone. It's an exploration of beauty, morality and the corrupting influence of desire.

📖 A Gothic Horror that centers Dorian Gray as he sinks into a life of crime and gross sensuality, his body retains perfect youth and vigor while his recently painted portrait grows day by day into a hideous record of evil, which he must keep hidden from the world.

I will start out by saying that this is very much a product of its time. I myself find it to be a interesting perspective into history and to quote the book itself 'The books that the world calls immortal are books that show the world it's own shame.' For this I wouldn't recommend it to everyone but if you are interested in classics this would be near the top of my list.

Dorian Gray is a beautifully written book and the way in explores shallowness, vanity and casual cruelty is incredible. At its heart it's a character study steeped in the reality of human nature. Everyday people put beauty and youth before happiness and this shows the consequences of that kind of shallowness.

If you need a strong plot then this book probably isn't for you but if like me you find in fascinating to sit in a characters mind then I recommend.

wow. i really loved it. it was my first philosophical classic literature book. took me long to complete it, and it was a bit boring and slow a couple times but apart from that it was amazing. the more i think about it, the more i like it. its certainly very thought provoking. this book is about beauty, youth, morality, good and evil, vanity, narcissism, hedonism, (bad) influence, self identity, conscience, guilt, shame, regret, temptation, and so much more. read the censored version, but i do plan to read the uncensored one sometime. i think this was a great book to step my toes into philosophical literature - which i'm sure i'll be reading more of very soon.
