I'd like to give a 3.5 stars. It started VERY strong, and Skloot did a beautiful job of conjuring a different (horrifying) era that made me grateful for modern medical practices.

I think the topics surrounding the ethics of tissue research will be great for book club. My only slight annoyance was that a solid portion of the book was about writing the book.

DID NOT FINISH

This book is much less about science than I was led to believe. Seems to mostly be a story about the Lacks family, who were poor, uneducated, and plagued by abuse and incest. The author also puts herself into the story too much. Surprised it has such good reviews.

Wow. I truly have so many thoughts and feelings. I think everyone should read this, at least parts of it. The narrative around science, autonomy, representation and the intersection of humanity and research is incredible. I laughed, I cried, it made me think. This is a truly incredible collection of an important woman's life and her impact on life as we know it, though she never knew it herself.
