Good story collection, originally in Korean. The stories vary wildly from grotesque and gore-filled horror to slow stories of creeping horror. Mostly it seems like a theme this book generally runs with is survival at any cost, and what the consequences are when that comes at te expense of another person.

As it is horror, definitely checking the CW is something people should do before jumping in.

I usually steer clear of horror and short stories, so this wouldn't be my first choice of book, but I'm quite pleased I decided to read it. The stories are quite dark, confusing, and chilling that sometimes I rushed to end or had to put the book down altogether to take a break & process what I had just read. Some stories have surprising twists.

My favorite story was Ruler of Winds and Sands. It's also the most palatable story out of the book with the fewest horror elements. There are so many themes and complexities in these shorts that I'd like to give them all a re-read at some point.

I read the first 4 stories, but started to get really overwhelmed with a sense of dread and also of extreme anxiety due to the dead animals and children. It's probably due to some stuff I am working through right now but it really hit a place that cause a lot of emotional distress.

The stories are really well written with interesting premises. Some are just emotionally draining.

This collection of short stories is so wildly disturbing, but I could not stop listening. Some ended on a reasonable conclusion, and others I was wishing there was more of an explanation. They’re at times grotesque and haunting. My jaw dropped to the floor multiple times.

Chung has the ability to leave you speechless and questioning why you picked up the book in the first place. I was enamored by Chung’s descriptive writing style from the very first story. If you enjoy horror, speculative fiction, and fairytales, then you’re in the right place, since this book is truly a mixture of all of these.

I chose this for #TheDiverseBaseline May Prompt A: A book by an East Asian, Native Hawaiian, or Pacific Islander author.

The translation from Korean to English is a bit off at times. However, that does not dim the bizarre beauty of this collection.

what a strange little book. some of these stories had some interesting concepts that i wish could be expanded upon while others were just silly and weird. the writing style often felt very juvenile which also sometimes made it a little hard to take seriously. a lot of it felt like some kid writing an r/nosleep story, trying too hard to make it weird and unsettling/scary. still, some of them had potential. i just don't think this was really for me though.
