I think this book is a great introduction into Japanese literature. I have read a couple of Haruji Murukami’s books to date but this is one of my favourites.
Set in 1960’s Japan, it’s the story of the ups and downs of Toru and Naoko’s love story. Pay attention to the song lyrics at the start of the book and it will tell you all you need to know about the story’s end.
This book feels more rooted in reality than some of his other works (like a Wild Sheep’s Chase, which I haven’t got around to finishing). If your looking for that magical realism aspect, look elsewhere, but if you want to feel broken hearted come on in
dark slow-paced

I’m honestly speechless about how bad this book is. I genuinely want to burn it. Ir made me feel disgust throughout each chapter.

I don’t think Murakami has ever talked to a woman nor have sex, for what matter.

This book is just amazing.

The central character, Toru Watanabe, gives the impression that he's detached and unfeeling and just going through life without really doing or feeling anything, rather, things are just happening to him. But his actions and his dialogues and letters give a deep insight into how wise and deep and depressed he truly is. The dialogues of this book are so immersive real and rich.

There is a sad undertone in this whole book that moved me. You get the sense of how broken or sad the characters are from everything they do or say, making their interactions and intimate times truly precious and fragile. But also, there is certain liveliness and optimism too. Overall, it is an amazing read.

Lowkey hatar att jag gillade den så mycket. Hade lätt varit en 5:a om han inte hade haft sex med Reiko i slutet, kändes bara weird :/

I.. Wow.

This was my first Murakami novel and it won't be the last at all. His prose and the story being told was amazing. I went into this novel, knowing The Beatles were a big role in the idea for the novel. Now I absolutely love The Beatles and it was why I was so excited about it. But what actually happened was that I was completely blown away by it. The story, yet simple was something that blew me away.

I was so attached to each and every character and the journey that each and every one of them went through. They each went through so much, such complex histories and stories to tell that made them such great people to read about. You felt for each of the characters and for what was going on in their lives. And there was so much death, so sad.

And not only The Beatles but Gustav Mahler, an amazing composer, was mentioned!

Absolutely stunning read, 100 percent recommend!
