It's fine. Just a slice of life story about a big family and their tragic and troublesome adoptive sister. The characters were all kindof annoying, but I think they were supposed to be like that in the name of realism. Some of the stuff about gender roles is a bit dated, but nothing has aged so poorly as to make the book offensive.

Rereading this series, one of my very favorite as a child. So many memories for me, and I love seeing my Claire enjoy them as well.

Maybe my twelfth read? :) loved this growing up. It's dated in some ways, and very relevant in others. I can picture their house and always longed to be a pet of the Austin family. My favorite of the series.

Another story about an idealic family, who still appears normal. I really like L'Engle's portrayal of the family, the love that surrounds them and the memories they create as a family. Written from the perspective of the 12 year girl in the family. I put it up there with the Melendy Quartet and Penderwicks, of a good book, with good values being taught in the home portrayed, yet the characters still have their faults. This book also deals with grief and how to cope with it through love.

A Wrinkle in Time by this same author will always be one of my top 10 favorite books, and was my introduction to Science Fiction (just as the Chronicles of Narnia was my introduction to fantasy). The Austin Series doesn't have any Science Fiction elements in it, but it is still a good YA novel.

I think I'll be re-reading all of L'Engle's books

This was extremely comforting last night when I couldn't sleep. I've read it so many times, going back to the Austins' old farmhouse felt like going back to my grandparents' old farmhouse.

Re-reading, or re-listening, to this one and had to change my rating to 5 stars. It tugs at my heart and is such a sweet friend! Maybe it's because it's such a welcome break from the death, murder, and crime from my previous read but I don't know... I think it's just a beautiful book with a lovely family at the center of it
