MER was a really cute young adult graphic novel and I liked the mythology of the Mer people. In fact I would love to have more of this story, especially after the ending, which isn't a complete cliffhanger but is a bit ambiguous. I won't give anything away but I know how I'm imagining it ended. I also really liked the art for MER, it was really colorful and something about the drawings, especially the people, really worked for me.

'Mer' by Joelle Sellner is a YA graphic novel about mermaids and teen drama. It's an interesting premise, but seemed to fall apart towards the end.

Aryn and her father and sister have recently moved after the death of her mother. She is going through all the drama of starting a new school. She makes friends with a cute boy, but he has a secret. He's not the only one with a secret. The most popular girl in school has a famous pop singer step-mother. It all leads to revealing things about mermaids among us and the kinds of things that hunt them.

It's a girl meets boy story with a fantasy twist. I like the characters ok. It takes a kind of dark and gross twist towards the end. It was hinted at throughout the book, but it just felt sudden and dark. The art isn't bad, but feels a bit rushed in places. The colors are good. It's not a bad YA graphic novel, but I'm not sure I've read a lot in this category.

I received a review copy of this graphic novel from Lion Forge/Roar, Diamond Book Distributors, and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this graphic novel.

I really wanted this one to be good. It was a really cute idea but it just didn't pan out. The plot was so rushed and the artwork was not my style.

*got my copy from Edelweiss, Thank you!*

This one is a graphic novel and I found it entertaining. Although the lack of texts made it kind of confusing, it was still good. Loved the plot twists. Review to come in the blog.

Loved, the only issue I had that you could tell it was going to have a short run, because the plot of the two fishes out of water falling in love, is barely touched on. They meet, the boy saves girl's life, they fall in love. The conflict of the girl choosing between family and love, is also barely touched on. It would have felt like more of a conflict, if her father weren't such an asshole. Four months after the death of their mother, the dad decides to pick up their lives and move back out to his hometown. It's implied that her death crushes him, but you wouldn't know it. His expectations of his kids and the way he just throws shit at them, is kind of absurd. There is never a moment when the two characters connect and try to become better towards each other, the father never tries to connect with his daughter, and she has no interest and earning his trust back. His sudden dislike for the merboy when she comes home late, came out of nowhere. Nothing is ever really....resolved. It was a good read, but I wish it had been longer, in order that the characters could have been fleshed out better and given more of an opportunity to develop into whole characters. The art was fantastic, and the mer's and the rusalka were especially creative.

Although the art was interesting and colored well, the story did not stand up to it. Lackluster plot and poor character interactions made for a predictable read. The inclusion of the mer character designs in the back was interesting but only highlighted how little we saw mer characters in mer forms in the book.

I received an e-ARC from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

A fast-paced and beautiful graphic novel about mermaids and Atlantis! Though it's supposed to have Twilight elements in it, I didn't see anything like it. I would really love to see what happens next!

Mer is an okay read. The art is amazing, I liked the way it was colored and how it had lots of blues throughout to keep tying it to the sea. However, I found the story a little jumbled up, confusing at times. I wish it was done a little bit better.

Cliches.

It was a bit like watching Mean Girls, but with Mer people thrown in. Or twilight. Or any of those millions of other YA books where there is a cute boy, and two girls fight over him, and there are mean girls, and there are outsider kids.

Yeah, you've probably read them all.

So, why am I giving it three stars? Well, I always liked tales of the silkie, those sea folk that can take to the land. It wasn't a bad story. There was some cool stuff in it, even thought there were also a lot of cliches. I did like the monsters.

So, go into this with a bit of a caveat, that you have probably seen, and read a lot of these troupes before.

Thanks to Netgalley for making this book available for an honest review.
