Reread from middle school, because more have been published since I read the first few when they were new. Interesting idea. While this book *has* an arc, and mystery, and suspense, and so forth, it distinctly suffers on its own behalf as being mainly setup and exposition for the series as a whole, rather than telling anything interesting in and of itself.

Such a cool mystery, it really opens up as you read and you discover more and more about the characters' circumstances. Great reveals throughout, excited to read the rest of the series.

Excellent for reading with my children who were 7 and 12 at the time. The voices of the three young protagonists are quickly well developed and believable. The plot is suspenseful ending with a cliffhanger that sets the stage nicely for a thoughtful series. (I've already read on.)

Easy to read language, interesting mystery premise, but this first book definitely feels extremely preliminary. It doesn't stand on its own, it is very much a precursor to the main story.

Probably would have given it higher, if the pace didn't slow down so much in the middle. Clearly just a set up the plot kind of book, can't wait to read the next one.

What. The. Heck!!! This was so good that I'm glad I picked it up despite not really liking the cover! Every turn of the page intrigued me, the plot twists had me hooked, and the suspense had me at the edge of my seat. I hope to continue the rest of the series because I am dying of curiosity about how the story will continue to develop! This does read a little young for me but what the heck, that just made it an easier reading experience! Highly, highly recommended. A shining new favorite.

Haddix leaves the end of the book (and each chapter) hanging. It keeps you on the edge of your seat and reading late into the night.
I've been very surprised with her books and how clean they are! Every book I've read by her has left out the swearing and other inappropriate things; unlike most books written today.
After raving about what an amazing series this is, my dad finally decided to read it. He wasn't disappointed! He's in the middle of the series, and can't wait to get his hands on the next book!
I would recommend this book for anyone one between the ages of 9 and 100!
