hmm.

The night I first started reading this book I was absolutely whizzing through the pages. Everything progressed really nicely, and I was completely sucked back into the world of Elfhame, and I liked Wren. I missed the feeling of simpler plotlines/structures that still managed to have surprising elements and especially revisiting all of the faerie schemes while not breaking my brain from the world building. However, when I kept reading (and when I finally got to the end), I sat with myself and just thought.

I didn't feel any chemistry between Oak and Wren. They're both cute and all that stuff but when they were interacting and ya know smooching there was just nothing between them or even much leading up to those moments. I also know that Wren has been through so much and I feel for her but I was hoping for more angst, anger, and really anything that could really solidify her as a strong fmc like Jude. Oak and Wren are nothing like Jude and Cardan which is okay but I was hoping for idk something sparking. I was also super dissatisfied with the ending. A lot happened in the last few chapters but then the whole betrayal thing happened and Wren kinda phwoomed and lashed out and then captured Oak and then that was it??

3.5 stars it was better than i thought but also somehow felt short of certain expectations.

“My greatest weakness has always been my desire for love. It is a yawning chasm within me, and the more that I reach for it, the more easily I am tricked. I am a walking bruise, an open sore. ”

Sobbing

Great read, lots of complexity and great fantasy world. Wren is an intriguing character and somehow different. She makes profound discoveries about herself and those around her as she discovers her true self her and destiny.

Having read the Cruel Prince series first, this book seemed to draw too much from the characters of it. And I found myself not drawn into the story as much as I was the first ones. The main character however, was very interesting and her dynamics with the supporting cast was intriguing, the ending was what shocked me the most, leaving me on a cliffhanger that I've never seen done before. So I will be finding and reading the second book and I can only hope that it provides me with a more enticing experience.
