I learned so much while reading this book. It was very nice to see another person try to chronicle their family history and navigate being a child of immigrants. The storytelling and illustration fit the tone so well, and the last 20 or so pages were absolutely phenomenal and so heart-wrenching. Definitely recommend if you wanna learn more about Vietnamese history and people from actual Vietnamese people.
One of the perks of being married to a high school teacher is that, before each summer, the school librarian creates a suggested summer reading list. Through that list, I have the opportunity to discover books that otherwise would have been off my radar. The Best We Could Do is one such book.
This book is a graphic novel about one former Vietnamese refugee’s reflection on her life, the complexity of growing up and becoming an adult, her complicated relationship with her parents, her transformation from a “boat person” to an American, and so much more. It is very well done. I admire the courage that the writer/artist had to tell this honest story. I learned a lot about Vietnamese history/colonialism, and an insider’s perspective of the war in Vietnam. Very interest, very well done, and I highly recommend it. While (possibly) aimed at a young adult audience, anyone will find it interesting and accessible.

I never read graphic novels, but this book was so amazingly written and illustrated. Beautiful story, extremely emotional, made me cry quite a couple of times. Bui is truly the best.

read this for a class, but so glad that i did. the art was amazing and i really liked the style! really making me reflect on my relationship with my parents and helping me put words to the things that i feel. it’s always crazy to think about the different lives that our parents lived before we were born. a very heartbreaking but inspiring memoir
