It’s the first graphic memoir I have read and now I know that you should really take your time and look at each drawing and let it sink in along with the letters. It is so easy to just read quickly and then it feels surface level, even if the content is really deep. This was sad, but very informative and evocative.

This book was simultaneously a memoir, a reflection on parenting and generational trauma, and a history lesson. It definitely deserves a close, slow read.

I shed some tears for this one and got a little history from it; in some ways it’s relative to my relationship with my family and there were some quotes in here that stuck with me. It was an easy read considering how I don’t read like I used to.

From the French occupation to Vietnam independence to the Vietnam War, Thi Bui brings us into her family's history of surviving. The art is beautiful, and I was moved to tears by the resilience of the immigrant journey and the author's sincerity and honesty in exploring her parents' childhoods and lives, and how that reflects upon her own journey as a mother.

Excellent read. I truly enjoyed the journey of the author. Beautifully written and lovely graphics. Highly recommend.
