What a spicy lil masquerade ball! 🥵🥵🥵 Oops I caught feelings x2. Katherine can step on me. Preston was a first-class knob, but he wins  points for excellent bedroom skills and (finally) supporting Katherine. Could have used 25% more groveling. Preston didn’t suffer enough for me.

Honestly this book was so mid. There was too much telling and not enough showing, especially when it came to the personality of ther heroine. It's unfortunate because I felt like the set up was SO juicy but the rest of the book fell flat.

I was especially disappointed by the ending; I assumed that Preston would have a big redemption arc that would mostly happen off page where he would become a better man (aka NOT a criminal sleazeball real estate developer) and learn to operate with compassion and ethics as part of becoming worthy of Kat. But that....doesn't happen at all? And Kats father is honestly kind of a dick and it's not explored at all and is fully forgiven with no conversation between Kat and her dad? There are some gratifying moments where Kat stands up for herself but they can't carry the whole book unfortunately.

I mostly read this because I want to be properly set up the Duke and Nelly's book, and by God that book better DELIVER. This one is fine but you can honestly skip it.

I love this author and will read anything she writes. I really loved the set up of this one. I just had a tough time connecting with the characters.
I also think what the hero did with regards to the heroine’s real estate/art museum goals was super sketchy and he didn’t grovel nearly enough as he needed to.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.

While I typically enjoy historical romance, this book was not for me. The number of historical inaccuracies and modern dialogue took me out of the story too frequently and made it not enjoyable. There is a supper club, which wasn't invented until the 1930s; a character draws a hot bath, but the technology to do so wasn't available yet; the male lead asks the [unwed, debutante] female lead if he could "buy her a drink" and she admits she "has a crush" on him, they discuss "calling an ambulance".

This would have been a much more enjoyable and effective book if it was just set in the 30s or later, as the author apparently thinks it is.
