A good literary work, however, quite sermonic and preaching.

Justine naively trusts someone —> Justine is brutally raped and abused by libertines who explain their crimes as natural and necessary —> Justine escapes —> Justine naively trusts someone, repeat ad nauseam.

Dreadfully repetitive, boring, barely a novel, clunky exposition of libertine arguments. Only interesting in how it prefigures modern notions of modern relativism and Nietzsche’s account of morality as a power structure.

Philosophical or pure porn? I have no idea. One thing is certain:Justin-A very unlucky and naive lady.

This book is so vile. It's ridiculousness borders on comical, especially when every detestable act (think murder/rape/etc) was rewarded with wealth, post haste. I think the biggest failure for me is that de Sade didn't really make me think about a whole lot, or question any previously held belief that I had, or really validate any current belief for that matter. There were a couple of things I thought were fairly accurate, like "the wretched take comfort in seeing other sufferers about them", but this is old news to me. You know, I don't really read philosophy so at the risk of not 'getting it', I'll stop myself here...

Increíblemente perturbador.

TW// Rape, torture

Justine has abandoned common sense for YHWH. She keeps running into crazy rapists but her only defense is to throw herself at their feet and beg for mercy. And after the first few times of being assaulted, you would think she'd realize that these people do not care a lick about the well-being of others. She is even treated to long explanations of their positions, yet despite the numerous horrors she faces she never increases in wisdom.

Justine is obviously a hyperbole. How religion scams the weak and kills critical thinking skills, and how rich people get away with a lot of bullshit.

But also, like...de Sade actually thinks you should behave like Justine's tormentors so--LMAO

Books like these are so difficult to rate. The events in the book made me feel sick but that can only be achieved with good writing, so I am conflicted. I kept screaming at the main character in my mind not to trust people and assume the good in them. However, you shouldn’t always do the opposite either. The bits where all the sadistic people tried to justify their actions were outrageously funny in a sort of twisted way. Life is unfair but experiencing any of the things in the book would make me want to die or at least have major trust issues so I don’t think that the main character was very believable.
