3.5 stars. Totally improbable but nonetheless somewhat delightful romp through house arrest, sibling relationships, possible murder, food, real estate, and love. Very quick read and very silly.
The sort of hilarity you need after a long day and want on a flight.

Perfect light summer read. One of those books where nothing bad happens.
Ms. Demeanor is a delightful book that follows the story of Jane, an attorney who is caught on video having sex on the roof of her Manhattan apartment. As a result, she is arrested for public indecency and sentenced to six months of home confinement. During her confinement, she meets Perry, another resident in her building who is also under house arrest for a white-collar crime. Jane and Perry develop a friendship, with Jane's love for cooking and Perry's willingness to be fed bringing them closer together. As they spend more time together, their relationship begins to evolve into something more.
The book features a well-drawn cast of characters who feel like real people. Lipman's writing is entertaining, filled with humor and heart, which keeps the reader engaged throughout. One of the highlights of the story is Jane's creation of a TikTok channel dedicated to cooking recipes from 1800s cookbooks, which adds an interesting and unique element to the plot.
Overall, Ms. Demeanor is a light, funny, and entertaining read that can be enjoyed in a short amount of time. It satisfies the requirements of those looking for a quick and enjoyable book.
This was my first book by Elinor Lipman and I'll definitely be reading more
