While I thoroughly enjoyed Jane’s quick sarcasm and intelligence, and loveddddd the unapologetic sexuality of her story’s start, I felt that it worked so hard to develop the characters and pretense that it lost its epoch and rushed its resolve.
Still a fun read for sure.

I originally gave this 3 Stars, but had to come back and downgrade it to 2 Stars as the more I thought about the story, the angrier I got. It had such potential to be a fun mystery and it wasn't that at all. The biggest plot of the book doesn't even get solved and there are numerous character and subplots that seem like they are going to be important and are just there for no reason, add nothing apparently, and then also never get resolved. Everything about the story ended up being pointless and a waste of time.
I thought beginning elements were funny in absurdist fashion but the story took a turn for cliche resolutions which i found annoying especially with insufficient character development.
I had read an Eleanor Lipman book a long time ago, hated it, and well, this book had the same result. Why does every book about a middle age mean the middle aged woman has to be quirky? Why was every character in this book stupid? Two strikes and you are out Eleanor Lipman.
I loved this charming book with low key expectations. Elinor Lipman makes me laugh while I read, and for that I'm planning to read more of her books.
It is your traditional 'boy meets girl with no intention of falling in love' story, but add that both boy and girl are on house arrest, girl has an overbearing twin sister and Polish royalty get involved. It is not the most life changing story of the year, but it is a fun, romantic read with a satisfying ending.
Genuinely loved the premise but was left a little dissatisfied in the thin characterizations. Might also be because I know Elinor Lipman is capable of this but I wanted more sparkling chemistry with the romantic leads!!! Also the audiobook narrator read everything like a question, which did not help. Need more Jewishy audiobook narrators!
