Never seen the films, knew literally nothing going in.

Brilliant book, really takes a turn at the 33% mark, every section was very distinct, interesting and horrifying.

All the significant characters are absolutely monstrous blokes, with maybe 3 exceptions; less by the end.

Highlights for me were: end of book 1,  3-5 and 8

This isn't a perfect book. It often tells instead of shows, there are long passages that should've been edited out, some plot threads don't really go anywhere meaningful.

Despite these flaws, I had to give The Godfather five stars. It drew me in, painting such a vivid figure of the crime family the Corleones that I felt like I knew all the main characters personally. It's a long book, with winding passages, asides, and flashbacks, but it kept me anxious about what would happen next - something rare in a 450 page book, and I've already seen the movie!

I was warned and I didn’t heed it. The Godfather is spectacular, but it’s portrayal of women was too much for me. The Godfather suffers from the same problem as George R.R. Martin’s books: all the women are hypersexualized. It’s too bad, because I absolutely loved the book until each jarring aside taken by Mr. Puzo to describe the breasts of a woman or the lustful tryst between two other characters. It’s excessive; unnecessary.

I regret having to put this masterpiece down, but it just wasn’t fun to read.

I can finally figure out who is who, and why they killed Paulie!
