Reading The Glass Palace taught me so much about the history of South and Southeast Asia during the British Empire. It was fascinating to read about how people in India, Burma, and Malaya interacted and the unique but intersecting struggles they faced. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone interested in Southeast Asian history.

However, the plot was slow and dragged on until the end of the book. I also found that the characters were difficult to connect with because of the jumps in time from one generation to the next and the lack of time spent developing each character before telling the story of the next generation.

I'm not really big into historical fiction, but I am big into this book. Beautifully done, almost reminiscent of 500 years of solitude, a story that mixes both a interwoven family with historical events of some beautiful countries. As a big south east Asia person (particularly Burma) I devoured this book, learning a lot about my favorite country as well as cheering on some memorable characters. Definitely would recommend to people who like asia, historical fiction or family epics.
