I think this was more for the author’s release (well most art is) than literary consumption?
Idk but there was a lot of repetition — why is Jasmine always leaving in a “blur of white”? Mickey’s constant “urge to pee” I didn’t need to read that, let alone more than once 😭
I know it’s a coming of age but the age didn’t arrive?? Not even in the end.
Also didn’t enjoy the overall toooone. Mickey is extremely unlikeable and so difficult to empathise with (besides that one time).
But I’m sure people who enjoyed Queenie would like this..?

I found Mickey to be a super realistic character, but also found her so so so so so so frustrating. I also thought the book was oddly placed in her life. It ends right as the most interesting part begins. I found myself having to pause to roll my eyes at Mickey before I could continue listening many many times. I enjoyed the black sapphic representation, and how normal and authentic it felt. The rest of the story was unfortunately a little flat for me.

This was a book I needed to read at the time I read it. It's so plainly New York. So plainly Black. So plainly lesbian. I feel like Mickey needed to be held accountable for the ways she disregarded and hurt her loved ones that were trying to hold her through this really rough time. But I guess that's how the real world works, not everyone gets the storybook arc. I will say that while that is my only thing I think back on the book and wish to change, it was really refreshing to see a black lesbian woman get off the hook. That usually never happens so yipee!
