This book was a little bit of a slow start to me, especially because I found myself cringing at some of the character’s choices, but by the end I was engaged by and invested in the story and characters. I appreciated the perspective of a Black queer woman in media and found this to be a much more realistic portrayal of the queer community in NYC than some of the other books I’ve read recently.

I really wanted to like this book. I really did. But man.... this book just didn't do it for me. This was a disappointing read considering how much hype this book had and I was excited to read it. I started this book several months ago and for whatever reason, didn't finish. Well, what better time to dive back in than the holiday break, right? I will say that the first half was significantly more enjoyable than the second half, but overall the pacing of the entire book was very off-putting for me. I feel like the bulk of the book was inexplicably spent on the most boring part of Mickey's story. We spent so. much. time in Maryland where Mickey didn't really do.... much of anything. I felt like there were way too many characters, the buildup of her relationship with her dad had no real payoff. So much of the story didn't seem to go anywhere and the end of the book felt very anti-climactic. I felt so incredibly frustrated while reading this book and didn't really care about Mickey or her letter or what happened to her at all. Sigh.

DID NOT FINISH

mickey is unsufferable and everything about this felt so forced - very much a shame for a book that could have played a pivotal role in shedding a light on casual workplace racism.

I thought this book really vividly described the complicated emotions around losing a toxic job. I did feel a bit frustrated with some of Mickey’s relationships and didn’t love where they stood in the end but overall enjoyed this book and was rooting for the characters!
