This book had all the right things I would usually love buuuuutt unfortuantely wasn't for me! I found the main character really frustrating. Her choices were unbearable tbh.
I’m giving it 3.75 stars ⭐️
Very slice of life, black girl in and out of corporate world musings. The FL Mickey annoyed me at times, and in other moments I saw myself in her. She made tons of poor choices, and we don’t know how all the loose ties came together by the end of the book. But it was enjoyable!

I think the set up of this story was very well put together however the ending fell very flat for me. I understand not having clear resolutions to things but i’m just not buying mickey miraculously having this life changing moment after going to her home town, ignoring all her problems, and cheating on her gf with her ex who has a girlfriend…

ARC Review!!
This book was so so brilliant. A black girl stuck in the fast paced world of writing for a publishing company in New York gets everything nearly stripped away from her. How do you claw your way out of that depression when its affecting you, your significant other and your mental health?
I think this book is so important in exploring how one mourns something that was so bad to them, so unfair and yet it's all they know- who are they without that job title?
This book delves into the above themes while exploring the intersections of queerness and blackness. How upbringing and your past might influence your present day self and how to move forward.
I melted into this book and loved every minute of it- if you're looking for a contemporary story of a queer black girl finding herself, you'll love this.
Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book!! :)

more of a 3.5, but i was really hoping we’d see more from this book. i expected the primary focus to be around the racism in mickey’s industry as well as the impact of her letter - but we didn’t even get so much as an insight to the TV interview that was hyped up in the final chapters.
denton-hurst’s descriptive writing skills were great, and it was effortless for me to picture the details in every scene, but overall, the lack of an ‘end’ to the plot just left me feeling disappointed.although it was nice to see a bit of messy mentally ill sapphic representation!
i definitely wouldn’t write off any other books by this author though; and knowing this is only their debut novel has me hopeful for the future!
