I think if I’d read this book closer to when it came out I would have like it more. I think the interlude journey home was a little bit of a waste of time, and the tension with the ex could have been resolved much faster. There were so many “omg is it gonna happen now???” Moments that just didn’t come to fruition.

I actually enjoyed this book a lot.
The writing was beautiful, if frequently verbose to the edge of boredom. It was a lot of internal thoughts and dialogue and my friends found the characters insufferable. I found them to be stupidly human. I thought it was relatable as a queer woman, exhausted for the author and character for the added layer of being Black. If more white men read this book, they would understand the exhaustion that wears down on women and people who aren’t them.
I’m not sure how I felt about the letter she wrote being revealed so late in the book. It was a choice. I loved the letter itself though.
Some thoughts felt like they were ripped from my journal and made more beautiful, some experiences broke my heart in a way that felt too real. I snort-laughed more than once. All in all, a slow, captivating, interesting book.

4.5 (bc it took me a long time to fully get into it) but rounded up because I think that probably had more to do with me graduating and moving out than it did with Denton-Hursts fabulous fabulous prose. I really enjoyed this book. in a world FILLED with protagonists who work at magazines, Mickey has a unique voice and interesting journey. She is insufferable and egotistical and funny and you root for her. she’s my ideal protagonist to read (even though she is SO in the wrong with Lex). def recommend and i’ll for sure read everything else this author writes
