I love reading contemporary fiction because the stories are often poignant and important, but I tend to have to push through anxiety due to the uncomfortable topics they sometimes tackle. This book is a painful and beautiful and yes, uncomfortable, exploration of self and purpose. Work life vs family life. Past vs future. Yes the MFC was self-sabotaging and frustrating, as were many of her relationships and yes there was no happy wrap up or major lesson concretely explored; but I normally abhor an open-ended ending, and this ending felt perfect and exact.

Loved the messiness of this story! Dragged at parts and wanted to shake Mickey at times. Overall very relatable, and also a refreshing Plus-Size POV 💋✨🏙️

Here is a text I sent to my friend that explains the exact feelings I had when I abandoned this book:

OKAY so

this main character was fired from her job as a “journalist” only not really a journalist but she’s so entitled that this paragraph I just read is her saying how she would hate to be a nurse like her friend because her job is more glamorous. Only… she doesn’t have the job anymore. And she acknowledges that her friend makes more than twice as much money as she does but she still thinks she’s better because she “had a job that granted her access to rooms Jasmine never would get into, and that alone made it worth it” BITCH YOU WERE BEVER IN THOSE ROOMS AND YOU DONT HAVE THE JOB ANYMORE

So anyway. Mainly my problem was that the writing felt like they were trying to be too obvious and tell instead of show what the MC’s thoughts were and what she was feeling. She’s clearly depressed, embarrassed, and prone to self-sabotage. I get it. However being told multiple times, instead of being shown, is boring and frustrating. Overall I was just bored and every other review I read seemed to suggest it wouldn’t get better if I was already struggling so I abandoned her. So sorry, I’m just really needing to move on.
