The overall the characterizations in the second and third books took a nosedive. All nuance is gone and characters and situations became pretty black-and-white and simplistically moralistic. Never are we faced with multiple bad options and everyone seems to be a caricature. Having said that, I did enjoy it.

Now having read them all, I can easily say that this is the best of the trilogy. After all the set up in Mercy and plotting in Sword, this book has all the correct pacing and twists to make it a page turner. With new and much more interesting secondary characters, more filled out main characters and an ending that was more than acceptable, it was a pleasure to read!
