Solid but not as good as the first book. Felt like some of Apollo's character development from the last book didn't carry over. Also I think I find Calypso a little annoying, and I felt like I was missing part of Leo, maybe because the book isn't written from his perspective. But it was still fun and silly, plus we love an older lesbian couple.

2021 Update:
5 stars
I loved this. So much. Omg.
First things first: the plot - I am obsessed, I loved it, it was stunning - 10/10. I really loved the journey that we went on in this book and it was so great to see all of the characters grow and develop.

I really liked this book.
I feel like we've really gotten to see Apollo develop throughout the story. This book was just so funny! I love Apollo's mix of sarcasm but also pure big-headedness because the mix together so perfectly to become so funny. But, Apollo is far less selfish than in the original book which shows how much his character has developed.
I've got to say that I found the start a bit slow, but the further I got into it, the better. It took me about a month to read the first 150 pages, but then I read the remainder of the book in three days! The ending was seriously engaging and the chapters had so much suspense and tension which results in you needing to know what happens next.
The ending was really great. I loved it so much and I totally called the very end bit (the last page). This has made me really excited to read the next book. I can't wait to see more of our favourite characters reprise their roles.
I also really loved the addition of Calypso and Leo in this story. I found that their chemistry was really sweet and you could tell (that despite their bickering) they really care for each other. The only thing I didn't like was how Leo kept calling Calypso "mamacita" (which translates to 'mommy').
I really like Rick Riordan's writing style in this also. I like how he kept adding in pop-culture references like Bill Nye and lots of musicians. If it wasn't for how well he wrote Apollo, I fear that many of us may find him insufferable! Luckily, he develops so well, and you are left rooting for him!
This book also had some really funny and inspirational quotes.
Some of my favourite include:
'I had promised bill nye the science guy I would always promote safe laboratory practices. '
'Everything alive deserves a chance to grow.'
'Physical labour? Ugh'
'WISDOM, BABY!'
'Don’t forget to pick up some salsa'
'My vision and reasoning were impaired from sap damage.'
'We only fail when we stop trying. '
'I really wished dangerous quests could start at a more reasonable time, like perhaps three in the afternoon .'
'ìgboyà'
'He jokes more when he’s nervous. He also jokes worse when he’s nervous.'
'I don’t like spoilers. I want to be surprised.'
'Leavest me in the mercedes. I wish not to plunge into death and darkness.'
'Oh, a ukulele! Wonderful! - but I did not think that I would have stored pastries in a stringed instrument.'
'I strolled merrily onward, except when the tunnel’s ceiling was too low. In those places, I squatted merrily onward. '
'A flower is only part of the plant. Flowers grow back.'

I don't know if it's me, but I've been reading so slowly lately, I'm pretty grateful for the fact that I finished this book. Apollo is such a great protagonist, and I love seeing the character make all this progress on the narrative where he's no longer so full of himself. Rick Riordan can always be praised to name-drop even the most nostalgic members of his own universe and that ending cameo brought all the emotions to the surface.
Now I guess I'll have to wait a year for the next book. Such a pity.

These are the best books in this ‘verse.
“I was constantly amazed at how resilient mortals could be in the face of catastrophe. Even the most traumatised, shell-shocked humans could carry on as if things were completely normal. Meals were still prepared. Work was still done. Piano lessons were commenced and carrot sticks munched.”

This is the last chapter book I read to my children. That phase of my life is over. It lasted a quarter of a century. My youngest child is now too old. We started this book together but I ended up finishing it on my own. I think it is important to record this fact.
It’s a great book. Apollo is an entertaining narrator & Riordan is absolutely on form with the plot and all the side characters and quips. There are old characters from previous books, engaging new characters, a good range of diversity, a nod to yet another pantheon of gods as yet unmined, and an exciting set-up for the rest of this series.
