I cried. A few times which is why it took me so long to finish.
I didn't expect so much of this to be prose! The majority of this compilation is essays, speeches, and short non-fiction stories, with all the proper poetry in the last quarter. But obviously Lorde's language is going to be beautiful regardless. This book is filled with such clarity and precise passion. And it's all so deeply personal. I didn't know much of anything about Lorde going in, so I kept looking up stuff about her life to contextualize her stories.
I listened to the audiobook from Tantor Media, where they made the decision to have the narrator read it as emotionless as possible. I think it was a bad call, I would have loved to hear a little dramatization. There is so much righteous anger and burning emotion in these words, it's extremely discordant to hear them read like a PA announcement at an airport.
Favourite sections:
•The Transformation of Silence into Language and Action
•My Mother's Mortar
•The Master's Tools Will Never Dismantle the Master's House
•The Uses of Anger: Women Responding to Racism
•Fourth of July
•Is Your Hair Still Political?
•from Cables to Rage
•from New York Head Shop and Museum
•from The Black Unicorn

Audre Lorde left me feeling inspired and hopeful about the future. Where to put my energy now. A lot of thought provoking information. How to feel empowered in a world that disenfranchises minoritied groups. I am not liberated until we are all liberated. The work isn't over. Sowing seeds that make the future worth living in. Not in an expecting perfection kind of way but in everything you breath meaning into has an impact kind of thing. Be kind to yourself. You are fighting the good fight.

Poetry and Prose for the ages. I loved this and haven’t even finished completely taking in all the concepts of the beauty of experience for the Black and Queer peoples and women in the world. I’ll have to update this review after a few more reads! But this is beautiful. I loved it. A wonderful read.
