I just keep coming back to this one. It's so charming! And wholesome! And, okay, sexist and racist-- but not so very much so.

Re-read 6/26 on the bus to New York.

I really enjoyed the first part of the story, but was very disappointed by the second part. I thought the second half of the story would be a commentary on domesticity and Victorian marriage, but instead it turned out to be a melodrama with racist undertones. Unfortunately just expected more from a book that is taught alongside P and P and Jane Eyre by some american colleges. Would still recommend though for the lovely first half of the story!

This is a hard one to review. I read it before and during exam time and it did a good job at entertaining me but I don't think I would reread it or recommend it to someone.

The Making of a Marchioness is my favourite book of all time; poor-but-honest girl makes good, shallow fashionable crowd exposed as frivolous idiots, true love, black magic, jealousy and British colonialism. What's not to like? Bloody marvellous.
