I was completely thrown by Douglass's writing style; he had an interesting story to tell about his boyhood in slavery, but I'm not sure it came across as cleanly as it could have. Still, you have to admit he was a great writer and so much of what he wrote about still rings true today.
A vivid description of what the author endured during his years as a slave. Many examples of cruelty and injustice are given in detail, beginning with the author's separation from his mother when he was only a year old. The depiction of many of the slave-owners as being considered very pious people by their peers, yet they would starve and beat their servants just shows how large a disconnect there was between the ideals of freedom and democracy and how the laws of the land actually perpetuated the opposite. Begins with a foreword from William Lloyd Garrison.

I don't know why I never read this before. Everyone ought to. It's an essential part of American history, and the insight in it is irreplaceable. It makes me want to read other slave narratives. The personal story has a greater impact on me than just reading a history textbook.
Why did I have to read this? I’m literally black. I mean, it was good. But I’ve already done my part
This is an excellent book, showing the horrors of slavery. I also learned some new things....for example, apparently the number of slave owners who lived in beautiful antebellum mansions was rare. The majority of slave owners were farmers whose houses were pretty plain and ordinary. This book also shows how being empowered by learning to read contributed greatly to his desire to be free. Finally, Mr. Douglass' faith in God is evident as what sustained him and motivated him.

I rather liked this book. But it was very sad to see how the slave's lives were during that time. But it was an eye-opener to me and again, i think that i would've enjoyed it more if i didn't have to read it for school.

"You have seen how a man was made a slave; you shall see how a slave was made a man."
I think that this autobiography was so eloquently written, and beautifully portrayed. I so, so enjoyed reading this first-hand depiction of life as an American Slave.
Frederick Douglass is definitely up there with one of my top role-models in history after reading this book. His patience and perseverance were astonishing, and he shows such strength, maturity, and passion for liberty and his rights as a human being.
His writing was engaging and enlightening, and I just think his story is so powerful. Highly recommend!
Have a great evening ( ͡• ͜ʖ ͡• )
