Every person ever should read this book. It's a heart-wrenching example of history and is still, unfortunately, very relevant today. The appendix is especially amazing and puts into words my thoughts about much of Christianity.

I LOVED this narrative. There were so many excellent points that I had to often take a moment to think about the truth of what Frederick Douglass said. In fact, this book has given me reason to consider the exact topic I would like to pursue in my quest for higher education.

This man was truly amazing!

A 50,000 foot view of the life of Fredrick Douglass from his birth into slavery to his eventual escape to freedom. I found this to be a fascinating, albeit a strangely unemotional, read. Certainly, I was greatly disturbed by the many examples of cruelty and hatred unleashed against Douglass and his fellow slaves. However, the book reads more like a documentary as opposed to a work of dramatic fiction. I found this effective as it allowed for many themes to rise to the surface. This is an important read for anyone who wants to understand more about this shameful period of American history and the prejudices that continue to exist today.

“They attend with Pharisaical strictness to the outward forms of religion, and at the same time neglect the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith....Shall I not visit for these things? saith the Lord. Shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this?”
