This Naked Mind

I started this book 2 years ago at a point when I felt Covid had given me an unhealthy relationship with alcohol. It took me until now to finish it (and honestly I skimmed the last few chapters) because of the holier than thou voice that came from the author. And the promise of tools to help you “control alcohol”? There are none. While there is some interesting scientific information in the book, I just felt that she was trying to shame me into giving up alcohol. Which honestly made me want to drink more to spite her.

Very eye opening. A little repetitive. Had some great information in it that I will pass on!

This book was not written for me, and I therefore can’t fairly rate it. If you’re worried about your relationship with alcohol and want someone to try to talk you out of drinking ever again, yes, give this a try. If it works for anyone—and it has clearly worked for many people—then it’s most definitely worth a shot.

I picked this up out of curiosity. I didn’t grow up around alcohol, and the nonchalance of drinking culture I see as an adult still confuses me. Grace is trying to sound all the alarm bells re: that culture, and I wanted to hear her take. I think it’s valid to wonder why we regularly consume something that can so quickly turn dangerous. I think it’s good to question why drinking is so central to so many social activities, especially in cities. I think it’s healthy to reconsider attending any event that you feel like you need a drink to get through. And I think it’s really, really important to understand that ANYONE can develop a dependence on alcohol, regardless of what various marketing tactics have made you believe an alcoholic looks like. Grace makes all of these points, and I will gladly echo them.

However, it’s dangerous to start talking about alcohol as the root of all evil. Alcohol does not CAUSE sexual assault, or IPV, or homelessness. Grace talks about all of these horrors and more as if they would disappear if everyone just stopped drinking. Would they be less common? Maybe! But probably not! Those are all much bigger issues than sobriety can resolve, and to claim otherwise is harmful.

Grace rests her arguments on a few other lines of logic that I take issue with, but ultimately, she does tell you up front that she’s going to spend 7+ hours/however many hundreds of pages repeatedly arguing the evils of alcohol so that you stop feeling any desire to drink, and to that end, I am glad her approach seems to have worked for so many.

This book gave me so much encouragement. I listened to the audiobook so my family had to deal with me hollering YES! And EXACTLY! So much freedom, so much hope! It echoes my counselor and pastor in how God created our brains.
