Erika Sánchez lets readers into her life so easily, and it hardly took anything to feel connected to her throughout her memoir. She is very funny and honest, exploring different experiences in each section. She doesn’t back down from talking about mental illness, being Latina in the united states, family expectations, abortion, womanhood, and more.

I do think the first few chapters relied heavily on humor to be able to tell her story, while the later chapters felt more authentic(?) and grounded. i love her love for her daughter.

I found myself laughing and crying with Erika and her honestly and vulnerability are as refreshing as they are gritty.

At times it felt like the narrative elements could've used some tightening, but the prose is richly poetic.

A must-read memoir for those that are misfits, depressives, or Simpsons fans :D
Or if you just loved "I am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter".
I love Sánchez. I hope to hear much more from her. I know she's a new mother and professor so I hope that she will continue writing once she has more time. It took 10 years for her to create her novel so perhaps she is a slow writer. I'm here for it. I will happily savor anything she produces.
I recently attempted to read "Family Lore" by Elizabeth Acevedo and did not care for it. All the reviews are talking about her unique perspective and voice. I did not get that. I get that from Sánchez. I think she is giving voice to an entire generation of women who have been silenced and continue to be silenced. I see them every day at my college and I hope they find her so they can see themselves and see another way/s.
