This book is like a rose unveiling itself throughout the night—at first it's slow, patient, only to speed into full bloom in the morning, when all is revealed. It's a painful read, and the sadness comes precisely because of the inevitability of Sugar's painful fate. The ending is the only possible one, for all characters. The pain you read this book with comes from Pearl's wail that shakes the town. It comes from the unsaid response to Joe's confession. It comes from the unbreakable connection between Jude and Pearl that opens old wounds and starts new ones. It comes from the impossibility of Pearl and Sugar's friendship.

Oh dear. I do not get the hype, at all. This has been on my TBR forever, so it ended up being a big letdown. From almost the first sentence the storyline is nonstop sex, sexual violence, violence in general, misogyny, crude language, graphic descriptions of sex, with very little character development.
