I enjoyed this so much. Great retelling of Dracula. I can't wait to read the second book. This one definitely left me wanting more.
I went in with extremely low expectations which meant I was very surprised when I actually enjoyed this very much. It's a fun read, Dracula is written very well, I might have even fallen in love with him, oh wait, I already am
I wasn't sure what I was expecting from this book, but I was shockingly surprised by how much I enjoyed it. The wonderful slow seduction of the night that is Dracula, and a touch-starved FMC that grapples with her own feelings towards a monster. Oh, this book was delicious, and I will be reading the next one.
I struggled quite a bit with this one--I found it slow to start and generally pacing was as issue for me. Still, I really liked the premise, though I had some issues with the similarities to Jeaniene Frost's Night Prince series at the start. It's important to note that while the background characteristics have some similarities (girl with powers & can't touch people, Vlad), once I got further, it was clear that that was the extent of the similarities.
While I rated this an ok book, it really set the stage for book 2, which I would definitely categorize as a five-star read.

Vlad and Maxine were an interesting pairing. They were both enigmas to the people around them but for very different reasons. In true Kingsley style, Vlad was villainous, selfish, and obsessive. Maxine was empathic, selfless, and lonely. They fit together beautifully.

Kathryn Ann Kingsley (I see you first name twin) is often hit-or-miss for me. This is pretty good, but I think the books probably should have been one book, with tighter editing (the vacillation is very redundant). I like the "abilities" world-building and the expansion of the traditional Dracula mythos, and, having re-watched recently Nosferatu (1978) and Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992), this hit on something I was particularly interested in while watching the 1992 film. WHY IN THE WORLD (purely as a metaphor, removing "souls" and morality from the question) WOULD MINA CHOOSE BLAND JONATHAN HARKER when she could have independence and passion and freedom she would never get in society when playing by society's rules? Kingsley explores that here. What are these rules, and why do we have to follow them? Why not follow your heart and spurn these expectations? Suck it (pun intended), Victorian repressive folk.
