How does this book have such high reviews?! If you’ve never read a vampire story or really, much fantasy in general, you might could stick through this.
Maybe I will come back and give it another shot. Full disclosure I wasn’t in the mood for a vampire tale but this had such a high rating, I wanted to try. If you love very old school vampire tales with nothing new in structure, mystery, magic, or romance, you may enjoy this. If you haven’t enjoyed any fantasy books written in the past 25 years, this may do it for you.
If you love pompous men that have no flavor and give “dusty” a bland name, then give this a try.

So this one was a different take on the Dracula story, but add in a bit of dark romance as well. It was actually pretty interesting, and I liked hearing some familiar historic names. My biggest gripe is the MAJOR cliffhanger ending.

Such a great book! For this book, I feel that I personally was able to click more with the female lead, Maxine. She is an empath and feels and understands emotions on such a deep level, and I myself can be quite an emotional person as well (although not to Maxines extent thankfully lol), and she always seems to have a million things going through her head all of the time. As I was going through the book, it was nice watching her evolve from being a quiet and more reserved person, to mostly, speaking what is on her mind, I loved her character development. Enter Vlad, Vlad Tepes Dracula. Holy cow. I love his character! And he most definitely does not sparkle. Once again I love how Kathryn shines a light on more than the "good guy" and we can see the "villain" take center stage, and of course gets the girl (or so we hope). For me, when I was first reading about him, he seemed hellbent on destroying the city, and then he finds Maxine, or more like she unintentionally found him. Then she is able to see through his very many layers, and I feel we see him in a different light. I must also say, I definitely enjoyed the coffin scene. In general, I wouldn't say this book was a whirlwind, the scenes were definitely set, and the character development was there. I also fricking loved the banter between Maxine and Vlad. All in all, I definitely recommend to READ THIS BOOK!! lol
4.5 Stars / audiobook version
After reading Kingsley's Unseelie Prince series, I decided to check out her Dracula duology. She employs similar romance themes here... possession, surrender and a villainous love interest bent on destroying humanity (in this book its scaled back to the people of Boston). The female lead, Maxine, is a strong-willed empath and immediately sparks the interest and lust of Dracula. He is drawn to her due to her unique abilities and she is drawn to him as he is able to connect with her mentally and physically unlike any human being can.
I like the character development between Maxine & Dracula and their ensuing romance. The ending asks an interesting question... can Maxine accept Dracula's monstrous nature? Can she still love him despite the fact that he has murdered millions over the centuries? Is their unique connection enough to overlook his evil nature?

Kingsley surely loved the dark hero…. Who is no hero at all. Every over of her books so far has been an exploration of loves worth - can someone truly embrace the shadows of another’s soul and find them deserving of love? It’s an interesting question, one she explores well with this new rendition of the Dracula tale.

About the Book: Ever so often Dracula pulls away from some land he, and his monsters, have ravaged, to sink his claws into another. He cannot die, King of Vampires, but he can be killed, temporarily stopped. And that is the best this handful of hunters hoped for when they knocked on Maxine Parker’s door to ask her lend them her powers in the upcoming fight.
My Opinion: Castlevania type Dracula, tall, all sharp nails, confident to a point of arrogance due to his age, experience. And a woman who literally cannot be touched, for she destroys very souls. This is a very mediocre “I will love making you love me, naïve girl” romance.
