This is the graphic novel I wish I had when I was 14. I loved everything about this book.

I would not wish the experiences shown in this book on anyone. That is exactly why it’s so important to read about them. With reading comes an understanding of what others may being going through or experiencing. When told in the right ways, stories like this encourage empathy, healthy coping mechanisms, and positive communication skills. This story in particular upset me, but that shows it was well-done. The art and the writing is a solid show of talent!

The story was amazing and I found the protagonist's experience very relatable. The characters felt very realistic, especially compared to other books portraying 14-year-old boys. However, the ending of the story felt very rushed.

When I saw this graphic novel was not only the 4th most banned and challenged book in the country in 2022, but also effectively banned in nearby Marietta this year, I had to read it for myself. Flamer tells the semi-autobiographical story of a Boy Scout struggling with homophobia, racism, and fatphobia during his last week of camp before high school. Moving, vividly told, and deeply compassionate, this is an important story to have on our shelves.

Talks about being closeted, racisim, being not skinny. It was insightful to see a gay man's experience. Some people were just plain racist and homophobic. But Aiden has supportive friends. Even the guy he likes. Even though he's a football player he's a genuinely good guy. So are his other friends. It's a shame that Ted had to leave for being gay. That's just how it was at that time. Intresting to see how some people didn't care that he was gay but others did. There were great panels like canoeing at night. The symbolism of Aidan being reborn as he accepts himself. Good book.
