I might write a proper review later, but I just want to note my favorite thing about this book: the stiff-upper-lip, closed off, terrible at understanding and communicating his feelings hero is not a rarity in historical romance, but this version is just executed so well. James is a total trainwreck sometimes and he's really unfortunately relatable for me and I love it.

2.5 - Slightly better than the first in the series.
Spoiler Why must there always be an attempted murder plot?

The first half of the book was an excellent simmering slow burn marriage of convenience plot infused with hurt/comfort, culminating in a great dynamic between our pragmatic yet loyal leads. Unfortunately, the dysfunctional family skulking in the background and the use of conflict driven by lack of communication makes the latter half so much less enjoyable.

Can’t believe it took me so long to read this. Loved getting sucked back into this world and better yet by understanding Laura and James better. The plot twist was insane and I enjoyed every moment of this book.

After reading A perfect Gentleman, I was happy to see that James had a story of his own coz even in that book one would love that dry sarcasm from James. A Momentary Marriage brings forth another marriage of convenience between James and Laura, two very practical and pragmatic souls. It was delicious to immerse myself in this story especially to see the growth of love between these characters. The mystery angle entwined within the romance added the heady spicy mix.
A good book to curl up with and feel happy about!

This was absolutely delightful. I really enjoyed how James and Laura started out as enemies and gradually grew into something more. It wasn't a fast-paced romance due to the rather inauspicious start to their marriage. James is sure that he'll die soon and Laura agrees to marry him for the convenience of life after his untimely demise. Neither one anticipates that they'll want a different outcome. And, it's that movement from animosity to more tender emotions that is the strength of Momentary Marriage. I was very much put in mind of Mary Balogh's Only Beloved, although there was a quite a bit more wit in Momentary Marriage. James isn't always a likeable fellow, but the heroine often brings out the humanity in him. Fantastic read!

I read this solely for the Tropes. It wasn't bad and the reasoning behind the illness was thought out at least but it felt lacking somehow.

James de Vere and Laura Hinsdale had a hurtful past in A Perfect Gentleman. Though I had not read the story, I had no problem picking up on their uneasy distress.

Eleven years had elapsed when James needed the assistance of Laura’s father, a physician. Unfortunately, he had recently died and Laura was on the verge of losing everything. Aware of the heartbreak he caused her, James offered Laura a marriage of convenience. He explained she needn’t worry about intimacies because he was near death.

I appreciated Laura’s character: mature and levelheaded. James, as I soon learned, was pragmatic and aloof. He had moments of dire pain; it was not hard to imagine the direction of the plot.
He was being poisoned
. Laura came to his aid. While searching for answers, she took command. At the same time, cautious romantic gestures graced their days. I enjoyed the slow build-up.

With the help of her father’s journals, Laura discovered that James was
inhaling fumes of mercury. Dem, James’ faithful mastiff, was near him constantly throughout the story. I couldn’t understand why he was not affected with hallucinations and pain in a similar fashion. How could he be immune?

All in all, A Momentary Martiage was a pleasant but modernized historical romance with a measure of suspense. There was an interesting but expected twist at the end with a path for another story.
