I tried to like this. But it took Sadie waaay too long to figure out the point of her second chance year and for a romance book, the romance was almost non existent.

I read this book basically in a day! I thought Sadie was funny and relatable, with imperfections and flaws, doubts but also courage as she spends the book trying to figure out who she is and what she wants as she gets a second chance to “do over” a bad year. Jacob is adorable as the main male lead - kind and thoughtful; I also liked to see his confidence grow as the story progressed. I also really enjoyed the many of characters weaved into her story and how she went from taking people in the “sidelines” of her life for granted to realizing they were important and what she was looking for the whole time.
Fave scenes:
- The scene in the kitchen where Jacob was helping Sadie before the birthday.
- the scene where Sadie calls out the chef in the dining room
- Jacob singing to her on NYE

sadie was a bit dense, and it did grate on my nerves a bit, but i was emotionally invested in the story. i really appreciated that the author committed to the timeline of the second chance year, and didn’t have us flipping back and forth between the bad year and the do-over. jacob was so quietly sweet.
3.5 stars for a sweet story. The baking metaphors were just too much at a certain point, and I say this as someone who loves to bake. I was taken out of the story several times by the logistics and the many secondary plots. The parents were a bit over the top awful, which is often a drawback of contemporaries where that is a theme/feature. Ultimately enjoyable! Time travel is having a moment, I guess.

This book was NOTHING I expected it to be. While the blurb makes it seem as if the book focuses mostly on romance, it's really about Sadie finding herself and realizing what she wants out of life. If you want a book that really hones in on a romantic relationship, this is probably not the book for you. It IS full of warm feelings and fluff, but I feel the romance takes a step back for Sadie questioning the decisions she makes in her life and discovering her true identity. I sincerely loved how Melissa also included some of the struggles women face in their everyday lives - particularly in the workplace. Multiple female characters in the book bring up how they have been sexually harassed at work but decided to keep quiet (to keep their job, out of fear of not being believed, etc), which resonated with me, particularly because of the ongoing #MeToo movement. I love Sadie and Jacob with all my heart. I wish we got more of them together, but this is definitely a story that will stay with me regardless.
What I loved:
-Sadie and Owen's relationship
-the Higher Grounds Coffee community
-Sadie's cat, Gio
-Jacob's thoughtfulness
-girl power
-awful men getting what they deserve
What I didn't like:
-Sadie and Owen's parents (talk about AWFUL!?)
-Alex and his finance bros (screw you Zach!)
-Xavier and Rob (two thumbs down)
