God this book put me on the edge of my seat. All these characters are unlikeable but they were fun. Our MC may be insufferable at times but she made it interesting (though that decision with that ONE PERSON,,, hate it). It was a thrilling ride!

EDIT: After simmering with this book, I've decided that some of the themes and issues this book wants to discuss is discussed so shallowly and quickly, due to it's fast-paced nature. But it's still an enjoyable read.

This one felt very reminiscent of pretty little liars with a hint of gossip girl. The characters are definitely what kept me reading this one. Everyone brought such different elements to the story and I loved learning about their lives and the hardships that they were facing. Unfortunately a majority of the book is building up to a reveal that is incredibly unrealistic. I just felt like there was no way the characters wouldn't have picked up on a specific thing that goes down. I was a little let down, but I still enjoyed my time reading this.

this is marketed as one of us is lying meets crazy rich asians but it gives MAJOR pretty little liars vibes (after their friend is found dead, a group of 4 high school students become suspects in her murder while an anonymous person threatens to reveal their secrets).

i enjoyed it! the ending was a little bit disappointing though

Personally, the plot was pretty mid. cut and dry thriller, don't expect any mind-blowing twists.

However, culturally, this book kinda hit home for me in some places, as an Asian Canadian. The pressure to perform and do well in school as well as all the cultural references, I could really relate to it. There was a Boys over Flowers reference in this book and to be honest i'm like. Is this dated or is it a cultural icon? That one moment where some random said "you're smart because you're asian" really hit home. Like oof.

We read this book from Nancy's point of view and so we read her thoughts of how she scraped and fought for every bit of success she's had and she still needs more to succeed. She needs to be the best, since she doesn't have the advantage of money like the others do.

I really like Nancy, probably because I can see some of myself in her. She's a girl boss and I love her for it.
SpoilerI think probably it would have been more fun if the person who killed Jamie actually was Nancy, especially since we're reading the book from her POV. Like villain arc, girl boss style just killed her to get ahead and then gaslit her friends into taking her side. But also that's just me lmfao.

I should stop having high expectations of books because they almost always disappoint me.

What I did like about this was the main Asian characters, the rest was a story I’ve read many times before. I couldn’t connect with any of the characters.

Okay, so, I'm just going to say this - it would have been better if the reveal was a twin or something. I'm not even lying because the whole reveal just didn't make sense to me. Maybe it's because I didn't have that much coffee or food while reading How We Fall Apart.. but I'm just going to go with what I said. A twin would have been better.

In this, you will meet a tight group of friends - Nancy, Krystal, Akil, Alexander, and Jamie. Their ring leader is Jamie, who honestly annoyed the crap out of me. She wasn't a good person or friend to anyone. So it didn't really surprise me when she was the first victim either. As for everyone else? Well we get to know what the big secret is but we also get to know their dirty laundry as well.

I didn't really think the secrets were that big of a deal. It's their past and obviously they wanted it hidden but eh - they did nothing for me or anything. It also didn't help narrow down who could be behind it all either. I'll admit that it was pretty obvious that it wasn't someone within the group of friends though.

In the end, it was an okay book that ended up being a bit predictable. I didn't really like any character either but I am glad that I dove into it - I guess? Not sure why it's a series though?
