Fantastic read!

Peyton just received an offer to play Division I soccer at her first choice college... On the same day, she finds out her boyfriend who is an MMA fighter has been doping... In a rage, he pushes her down a flight of stairs, blowing out her knee... Nobody believes that she was pushed... This whirlwind of a beginning had me hooked...

There’s also a powerful author’s note at the end talking about how this story was inspired by a situation she experienced and what she could have done differently, along with several resources with places to reach out to... This was the first book by Kami Garcia that I’ve read... I heard her speak at Bookcon panel and knew I was going to love her writing...

Now this book was an entertaining, quick read. There were some parts I really enjoyed. I like the friendship Peyton has with her cousins. It was a little predictable

Eliot Rosewater Nominee (2020-2021)

Peyton is a star soccer player looking forward to a full ride to UNC, until she discovers her boyfriend's secret and threatens to expose him. She finds herself falling down the stairs and the possibility that her dreams of playing profession soccer may be at an end. What's worse is that people aren't believing her side of the story, they are believing his. She knows she was pushed, but the rest of the school is taking her boyfriends side and threatening her. To get away she moves to a small Tennessee town to live with her uncle and cousins. She thinks she is done with love, but then she meets Owen who is harboring secrets of his own. Can she put the past behind her or will it follow her and keep her from trusting again.

Peyton has some rough choices and a trying situation. I loved her character though. She was strong, smart, and sure of herself and her actions. I loved that she didn't back down and refused to take crap from anyone. Peyton's father died on military mission before the start of the novel. She and her mother are both tough as nails women who will stand up for themselves. I love that her mother never doubts Peyton's story even when everyone around her does. Actually, that part made me really angry...why isn't anyone believing her story. She was just a victim of abuse and you tell her she's a liar before even hearing her out. The romance was sweet and believable, but awfully coincidental that she fell for two MMA fighters.

Overall this was a good book with a feisty main character that will appeal to romance fans.

Cautions for sensitive readers:
Violence: Dating violence, MMA fighting, and guys in the novel tend to want to use their fists instead of the their heads.
Language: Some explicit language
Sex: Yes, there is a sex scene
Drugs/Alcohol: Peyton's ex was using performance enhancing drugs and there is alcohol drinking at parties.

DNF. Yikes. There are too many good books out there for me to waste time on such terrible writing.

4.8/5 Stars. This book made my heart hurt and cry and was just absolutely beautiful.

Peyton is a star soccer player and receives a offer from her first choice college to play on their team but her dreams are in jeopardy after an accident caused by her boyfriend.

I couldn’t put this book down and flew through it. Peyton really grew as a character and I liked her interactions with her twin cousins and Owen. I think she was a very strong female character that wasn’t just badass the whole time. She showed vulnerability which gave her depth. I don’t blame her for being terrified after what her ex-boyfriend did to her. When your trust is broken by someone you question every decision you make.

Trigger Warning: domestic abuse.

So good!!

4 stars. I'm conflicted. It was a really good book. I liked Owen. Peyton didn't bug me as much as I was afraid of. But I basically hated Tess. She's a terrible best friend. But I felt bad and I’m glad Peyton forgave her. I hated Reed. That is never gonna change. Her cousins cracked me up. I'm so happy Grace and Cameron got together. Good and heartfelt book, I loved that note by the author at the end. Great message, and I appreciated the author working through the struggle of writing about something so personal to help others.

Not my cup of tea. Wait-tea is good. This book is whatever would be in my cup if I dunked it into a backed up toilet. Stinky poo poo do do. I was waiting for something, anything to happen but it didn't. The 1st person POV is horrible. Writing style is amatuear. Characters were shallow and overdramatic. If it was a library book I would have stopped at chapter 3 but I bought it so I had to finish it. I near literally flushed my $ down the toilet.
