DNF. Yikes. There are too many good books out there for me to waste time on such terrible writing.
Although this story had a lot of movement and pull to keep me reading, it wasn’t enough to mask weak characterization and an unbelievable turn of events. I appreciated the attention brought to violence in relationships, but other than that this book breaks no new ground. It’s sadly predictable in every way.

Cocktails and Books received this book for free from Inkslinger PR in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect our opinion of the book or the content of our review.I adored this book. The subject matter was touchy, but Kami Garcia crafted a beautiful story of a strong girl who was determined and knew her own worth.
Peyton was on top of the world. She had a conditional offer from the college she was dying to play for and her best friend and boyfriend supporting her. But in the blink of an eye, the loving boyfriend she thought she had turned into someone else and Peyton's world turns upside down.
I loved Peyton and I loved how, despite having her best friend turn her back on her, she was determined to push forward. She was also determined to not like living with her uncle and cousins but it was wonderful to see her embrace her family and her new friends along with the truth that there are people who believed in her.
Owen was a fantastic hero for Peyton. He had his own demon he was fighting, but he gave Peyton that push to be more than the girl who's boyfriend stole her dreams. It was a war between these two, but eventually, it was a war that proved to Peyton her worth.
A fabulous YA book that will pull you in and leave you with a smile at the very end.

Peyton Rios has just scored a spot on the University of North Carolina’s National Championship-winning women’s soccer team. She just has to maintain her GPA, continue to showcase strong leadership & soccer skills, and play in her current position, center forward, at her high school this fall. Her senior year couldn’t be off to a better start.
However, things take a drastic turn when Peyton attends a local party with her MMA-fighting boyfriend, Reed. While searching for her phone in his car, Peyton discovers a steroid kit - Reed has been doping to achieve greater results in his MMA fights. When Peyton confronts him about it, things get heated between the two, and Peyton ends up at the bottom of a flight of stairs. She swears that Reed pushed her, but he denies it. What is evident is that Peyton’s knee is shattered, and her dreams of playing soccer at UNC are dashed.
Peyton, who is struggling with the recent loss of her dad, a Marine, in Iraq has just received another devastating blow. Soccer is her life. What will she do if she can’t play in college? Luckily, a top-notch physical therapist is located near her uncle’s home in Black Water, Tennessee. The therapist bets she can get Peyton back in the game for the spring season, so Peyton packs up her bags and moves in with her uncle and twin cousins for the next few months. Peyton plans to focus on her recovery, but what she didn’t count on is Owen Law, the mysterious hot guy at her new school. There’s just something about Owen, but after Reed, she has sworn off guys forever ... or has she?
Broken Beautiful Hearts by Kami Garcia is a sexy, heart-pumping thrill ride into the backwoods of Tennessee and the mixed martial arts circuit. Garcia’s colorful characters don’t back down from a fight, and the novel does not lack in its share of testosterone-fueled passion and fury. While Peyton does a worthy job of defending herself against catty girls and abusive guys, Garcia plays into the southern gentleman stereotype through her male characters who would never think of defending a woman’s honor sitting down. This novel is not short on violence, whether it be a schoolyard brawl or a professional fight in the octagon, making it a thrilling, edge-of-your-seat read.
Garcia’s Broken Beautiful Hearts is a refreshing entry in the YA genre, which can often find itself saturated with tropes and cliches. By bringing in MMA fighters to the dating game, Garcia has found a way to make this teenage love story feel dangerous and exciting. Regardless of the risks, her female lead, Peyton, is always in control. While Peyton can at times be overbearing in her efforts to not appear weak and dependent, she is a strong female character who does not take abuse in any form from the men (or women) in her life. This is not a damsel in distress tale.
If you love a swoon-worthy love story with a touch of southern charm and a dash of rage, you’ll enjoy Kami Garcia’s effortlessly fun Broken Beautiful Hearts.

I received Broken Beautiful Hearts from the publisher in return for an honest review.
Peyton had it all a handsome boyfriend, supportive best friend, and had just been offered a spot on for her freshman year of college to play soccer. She should be out celebrating with her boyfriend but he wanted to attend a party instead. When she realizes she left her phone in his car she runs out to get it. Finding something in the backseat of the car that changes her life in the blink of an eye. Now her chance to play soccer may just be a dream.
When things at home get too stressful her mom sends her off to spend the next four months living with her uncle and cousins. Hope that the change of scenery will be just what she needed as well allowing her to heal. Peyton isn't looking for a boyfriend, after all, she just got out of a rough relationship but one guy seems to be the exception to the rule. As Peyton learns to navigate a new school, with all new issues she can't seem to get away from her past. When it comes knocking will she be strong enough to withstand the blow?
I loved Peyton right from the start she's that sweet girl next door type and has a tragic past. Losing her father just over a year earlier has been rough but she's trying to move forward even if living with her uncle because he was with her father when he died. I didn't care for her D.C friends much but we didn't get a whole lot of time to know them. I did love her Tennessee friends they seem to be just what she needed. I knew right away Owen was just meant to be the one for Peyton even if they both have secrets they make it work.
I've been eagerly waiting to get closer to the release so that I could read Broken Beautiful Hearts. I admit I was a little nervous at the beginning as Peyton and I have a lot in common from our childhood, so I felt I was really able to connect with her. I knew right away that Owen was just the right guy for Peyton and the more we got to know him they needed each other. The chemistry between the two is sweet and I'm a fan of two broken people finding a happy ever after. I finished Broken Beautiful Hearts in just under 24 hours as it was too hard to put down and I was hooked. I love the book it's an emotional story that touches on a tough subject and leaves you feeling all warm and fuzzy. I thought my husband was going to hit me with a pillow when I was bawling like a baby as I read the last several chapters. This is my first book by the author and I loved every minute she's a beautiful story and I can't wait to read more of her books. I loved it!!!

I loved this book!! This was my first book by this author and I loved every second of it. While it’s ya it’s more of a mature ya. This deals with a very difficult subject matter that happens at the teen level that no one talks about or reports. Abuse by a boyfriend/girlfriend. The author finds an amazing balance in this book, while she talks about a serious subject she does interject humor to lighten the book up some. I plan on having my 18 year old read this, I know she would love it and I can’t recommend it enough. Told entirely in Peyton’s POV.
I liked the cause it was for. Overall it was a pretty good book I didn’t like some of book since it was too cliche
Review Time!
I finally got around to reading this TBR Veteran Broken Beautiful Hearts by Kami Garcia!
⭐⭐⭐⭐
I very much enjoyed this contemporary! This story touched on a subject that I feel is not discussed enough- domestic violence in teen relationships. This story follows Peyton Rios, a teenage girl who was pushed down the stairs by her high school boyfriend after confronting him about his drug usage. The push resulted in her leg being broken and her possibly losing the opportunity of a soccer scholarship. Peyton's best friend doesnt believe her and she has the accusation of being a liar from many people in the community. This story follows Peyton as she is in recovery from her injury and explores how she learns to move forward with her life after such traumatic event. Overall this story is a very important one and I'm glad to have read it.
