I cannot emphasize enough how much fatphobia is in this that goes unchecked. Lots of weight loss talk, lots of weight based bullying, lots and lots and lots of fat hate from every character.dumbmaddie's review

I know this is supposed to be funny but it just made me kinda sad. Except for the descriptions of the Wizard of Oz songs and choreography which were great. And I listened to the audiobook which had a wonderful narrator.

the show is one of my favorites but this was a bit of a let down. the whole thing felt like it was leading up to something and then it just gets teased at the very end. i have yet to read volume 2 since i can’t find it anywhere but i sincerely hope it picks up where this one left off. still such an amazing read though, and it made me quite emotional.

Since this is pulled directly from a diary, it's hard to pass any moral judgments on it - this is the true story of a fat teenage girl in 1989, dealing with the world as it was then & all of the crap our society was. Yes, there's internalized fatphobia that goes unexamined. Yes, there's internalized misogyny. Yes, Rae should have definitely been seeing a regular therapist instead of just getting spat out from her hospice stint. But it's also bitingly funny and sweet and real. That's what we asked it to be.
Moderate: Fatphobia, Body shaming, Eating disorder, and Mental illness
Minor: Self harm and Death
