I gotta say, this one disappointed me a little. I FLEW through the first book in the Gentleman Bastards series, but this second installment took a good 300 pages before the action really started, and I never got as sucked in as I was with the first one. Good thing it picked up when it did, because I allllmost gave up on it.
Too many confusing plot lines, too many characters with little to no development, too much detail but also not enough in places. But that’s the first third - once we get on the water, the plot picks up and we get to see more of the action-packed, cunning antics that I grew to expect with the first book.
One extra star just for the total badass lady pirates, but minus a half for a short but terribly distracting scene toward the end that very awkwardly and abruptly switches from past to present tense… and then switches right back. It’s less than a page out of 700 of them, but it felt so out of place I just couldn’t get over it.

Overall, 3.5 stars. Bit of a letdown, really, considering how much I LOVED the first one. But honestly that’s most of the problem. Still good, still entertaining. Bring on book 3!

Amazing follow-up to the tale of Locke Lamora. Even though it drifts a bit from the Ocean's 11 with magic that was the first, the pirate theme grabbed me and I rode along.
The story follows Locke and Jean in a new town while they try their best to conn everyone, but are, at the same time, bullied to do something they don't want to. How they fight back and survive extreme situations is the story told in the whole book.
Loving all this world and eager for more. Diving in the third book as soon as I can put my hands on it.
