Truly Madly Guilty

Liane Moriarty

3.45 AVERAGE

I typically enjoy Liane Moriarty's books, and Truly Madly Guilty was no exception (sort of). I was constantly racking my brain and reading between the lines to try to uncover the mysteries of this novel. Like all of Moriarty's books, this is a relatively easy read and the transitions between perspectives are smooth. The characters were interesting and I appreciated the honesty and authenticity they displayed when considering their guilt.

However, the story was slow and I half expected myself to throw the book across the room with each frustrating mention of "the barbecue". The plot twist was not what I expected and frankly, it was boring and anticlimactic. It also seemed as though Moriarty threw in some PG-rated sexual themes to appease readers who were undoubtedly becoming disinterested towards the end.

All in all, the plot was weak and dull, redeemed only by the general pleasure of Moriarty's writing and the themes she touches on.

When to Read - If you don’t mind a slow but easy read.

Extremely dull. The author spent so much time building up to a reveal that was so disappointing it made me angry.

This book was a weird one to get through. I almost DNFed it, I wasn’t surprised by a plots, but I’m also glad I finished it and I did find some really endearing things at the end.

Blah Blah Blah

This book was so long and drawn out. It didn’t even become interesting until about halfway through. I stuck with it because I’ve enjoyed the author’s work in the past. I figured that it would all make sense by the end. It ended up feeling like a lot of useless details and rambling. The characters were so quirky. I can’t say that they were likable. There was a lot of build up to what happened at a barbecue. When the whole story was finally reveled, it felt anticlimactic. I think I may have enjoyed this more if it was about 100 pages less foreshadowing.

I like the writing style at first, and found myself wanting to keep reading, but the story started to really drag. I followed one reviewer's advice and jumped ahead and didn't feel like I missed anything. I did think it was an interesting study in how one event affected so many people in different ways. And I did like how things wrapped up at the end, in the growth seen in characters. I did not like how I basically clean book would sometimes drop the f word out of nowhere.

DNF.
I know nothing about these characters except that they all went to a BBQ together one day.
It drags on so much about this imminent BBQ that I lost complete interest in what happened at the BBQ and stopped reading.

Odd story, started out like a great thriller and ended up all soft and squishy. The bite went right out of it when you found out what happened on "The day of the BBQ".
Interesting at times but not enough to really keep your interest peaked.
Not her best by far.
