A nice quick train read, I got through this is an few hours. I was after an easy thriller and this sounded intriguing - I haven't read anything written from the POV of a 9 year old, and the politics of the little friendship group within a scorching Italian hamlet made a very absorbing setting. The big discovery is actually a really chilling moment and probably the best bit of the book. I was pretty sucked into what was going to happen, turning the pages so quickly and raced through it. But the ending is SO DAMN UNSATISFYING AND DISAPPPONTING I almost dropped it down to 2 stars. I felt like the premise was so good, dark and twisted, but it peaked too early and at the end just fell short.
Disappointed by ANOTHER 1000 b.t.r.b.y.d book! And the quote on the cover "author (can't remember name) is greatest fiction writer of our times" or something like that. puhlease.

Avevo letto questo libro tanti anni fa e l'ho riletto coi miei studenti quest'anno. Una storia cruda, un protagonista puro e coraggioso con un'immaginazione prepotente che lo protegge da una realtà difficile da accettare e comprendere. Descrizioni vivide, linguaggio realistico e personaggi ben rappresentati. È stato bello leggere ed analizzare questo libro in classe. Tutti i miei studenti hanno seguito la storia con il fiato sospeso e hanno sperato il meglio per Michele e Filippo fino alla fine.
Came across this at an indie bookstore- glad I did. Language is very poetic, it's a great thriller and a quick read. The ending seemed abrupt to me, but still recommend.

Good enough! Great ending, but ruined by the fact that, at least in the English translation the narrator is revealed to be alive for at least 10 years after the events of the book, which taints both the narrative finesse of the story being told from a 9 year old’s perspective as well as the idea that the ending is the “natural” end of the story.
Even though this translated novel is told from the perspective of a nine-year-old Italian boy, it's not what I would consider YA or middle-grade. There are dark themes here: the loss of innocence, the realization that humans are more frightening than any monsters imaginable.
This one left me wth my stomach in knots. Pretty sure this is a book I'll remember for quite a while.
