It's very romantic, and there are also funny moments. Maria has written very good details of the magic that was being casted.

Loved this book! Very, very well told and I had to read the second in the series immediately (Magic Study). The only reason I did not get 5 stars from me is that some parts of the book are tropes, etc used quite commonly in fantasy novels, making some points a bit predictable. However, the way that Snyder tells the story and the wonderful characters more than make up for this!

3.5 stars maybe?

An enjoyable read, that kept me hooked and engaged. The romance was not an overpowering aspect of the plot, nor was it so insignificant that I found it lacking.

While the prose was not particularly strong (though fitting for a young adult novel), I found the story to be a harmonious tie of magic, adventure, found family, nuanced relationships, political intrigue, and romance.

Maria V. Snyder blows my mind. I love her writing style, her characters, her world-building, EVERYTHING.

This book is just amazing.
Yelena is a strong heroine who, despite all that's happened, remains true to her beliefs. She's a three-dimensional character with a strong development, and it's a pure joy to follow her story.
Valek is badass. But still, there's more to him than just a good soldiers. He's far more complex than you'd think after first meeting him and I thought it was simply brilliant how the reader, along with Yelena, slowly unraveled the puzzle that is Valek.
Ari and Janco were fun. Maren another badass. But even other characters, such as Margg and Rand were complex and never fell into any stereotypical niche.

The plot moves at a leisurely pace that keeps the reader hooked and never wanting for more, and what I think is quite important, while some things seem predictable, others are not. Snyder keeps you guessing, and that's important. Even better is that you can guess the end-result, but the journey to get there is so enthralling it grabs on to you and doesn't release you.

If there is something that I disliked, it was that at times, both Valek and Yelena seemed a bit too perfect. Everything they learn and do is instantly perfection. That bugged me a bit, as I enjoy reading about imperfections. But then again everything else about this book is so amazing; I didn't even mind it.

Fantastic book by a fabulous author!

Underholdende fantasy. Jeg glæder mig til næste bog i serien.
