This story really pulled me in. I found myself really invested in Yelena's survival and her struggle and enjoyed the relationship between her and Valek. While what she's going through is enough to make me sympathetic, I thought it was interesting how the story being written in first person definitely heightens the sense of being engaged with her.

The summary was promising. The beginning hooked me. The concept was intriguing. The actual execution was like wading through a pool of the blandest sludge imaginable. The author tried to combine two separate things into one plot, but in the end, the actual poison testing plot point was eclipsed by the 'magic,' which was nebulous at best. The main character was boring. The romance was abrupt and lazily concluded. It felt like the author stopped trying half-way through.
