Not loving that this is so condensed from the book. Makes it fly by, which is great. But it feels a bit shallow.

I have finally finished! I did really enjoy this book overall. The characters developed well (although you would expect nothing less over 1500 pages). I wanted more by the end. I wanted a different ending, come to that. The way each plot was woven into others was clever and I enjoyed the humour which was littered throughout. Worth your time!

It takes a great storyline to keep me engaged long enough to finish a book of this size-this is that kind of writing and this is that kind of book. I found it helpful to have shorter books going to give me that happy feeling of completing books and then assigning myself "so many" pages/chapters per day of this one.

Read it if you're interested in Indian culture, history, or if you just like stories about families who are imperfect and a bit dysfunctional, but aren't we all?

Probably a four of out five star? Epic effort: to read, and write no doubt. Found it simmered it along and didn't seem to peak or valley, but kept bubbling along. I was committed to finishing it. And found the cricket references in the final third, were ones that I could double check with my cricket book collection of India playing England in India in 1951/52 and they were always correct. Sometimes I wondered if there was too much political history, not enough and simple social story? Again, another Indian book showing not only the limiting caste system, but the element of their culture, I've found in literature mainly, is the deliberately circuitous communicative style, and layers of meaning and interpretations and the opportunities for unnecessary misunderstanding comes through again. I've never read a book that could also double as weight training aid. I may again. It was worth it, but not great.

I must say am quite disappointed at who 'The Suitable Boy' is, coz he certainly is not, at least per what everyone around the book feels. I am also disappointed at what I felt are some loose ends. I even found most of the characters annoying though believable. I , however, did like the fact that the characters on this book are way ahead of their times, considering the era the book is set in. That, and the fact, that the book is a joy for reading, are the only redeeming facts for this book. Certainly not worth reading the entire ~1400 pages for that, if you ask me.

1536 pages. Kind of reads like War and Peace, the Indian version. Good but whew.

Audiobook. I don’t remember where this recommendation came from but I do remember it was highly recommended. I found the story hard to follow. I never really felt attached to any of the characters. I was ready for the book to end. Two stars might be generous.

I’ve not finished it, it’s a dnf. It was ok, I didn’t hate it but for 1400 pages I need more than I didn’t hate it. If you’re going to make me read a looooooonng book, it needs to be more interesting. I will reread An Equal Music instead.
