I went in thinking this book was going to be similar to her first memoir, "I, Tina". While there were some of the same things because you can only talk about yourself so much, I loved the wisdom and reflection Tina put into this book. I like how we can see how the second part of her life went and the happiness she found.

After seeing the musical I was interested in this memoir which is an obvious update for I, Tina. I enjoyed this memoir because it had a lot of details on her life post-Ike specifically focusing on what she calls her “second act”, and I learned a lot about her life I didn’t know like her illnesses and the loss of her son. Highly recommend to anyone who had any interests in Tina Turner, the life of a survivor of domestic/intimate partner violence, or the life of a kick ass Black woman mega international rockstar!

So just another show business biography yes? No it is not. It is so much more!
Instead of a parade of highs and hit records., Tina does not shy away from sharing her lows or baring her soul. She tells of how as a naïve seventeen year old she was used and abused by her so called mentor/husband Ike Turner. He recognised her talent and how she could be an asset to his, let's face it, struggling band. But instead of nurturing it and helping her to grow he controlled her and abused her with physical violence.
It is arguable that any riches that the Ike & Tina Turner Revue gained was mostly down to Tina's incredible voice and stage presence.
When she left Ike after years abuse the only assets she had were two Jaguar cars and the right to use the name Tina Turner, which Ike had patented as another way of controlling her!
When trying to get work after she left, the first question she was asked was "Where's Ike! Could she ever escape him? Seemed very unlikely but with help from show business friends like David Bowie and Mick Jagger she slowly made her way up the ladder. Her "new" breakthrough came with the hit album Private Dancer. Her star continued to soar until she decided to retire with her new husband Elvin. A retirement that should have idyllic but was marred by serious illness. A srtoke, cancer and kidney failure resulting in a kidney transplant.
She also found it within her heart to forgive Ike.
But Tina, the battler she is, beat all the odds and continues to survive. And the world is a better place for it! A good and uplifting read and I urge you to read it!
