"After Erwin came into my life, my sad story became a love story "
Tina Turner writes that for her it was love at first sight and she and Erwin went on to find their happily ever after together...Erwin even donating one of his kidneys to Tina when her health began to fail. Her abusive first marriage to Ike Turner is well known , but the details are still shocking. "He threw hot coffee in my face" ; "He used my nose as a punching bag" ; "He broke my jaw." Just horrendous. She is frank about her own suicide attempt by taking 50 sleeping pills; and , sadly, as revealed in an afterword, one of her sons did take his own life at age 59.
She barely mentions her four sons in this book, for whatever reason. "I raised all four boys, and I wanted the best for them, but I was never a mushy mother hen type".... may be the most telling.
But her final escape from Ike, followed by the phenomenal success of going solo, starting with Private Dancer, and beyond, is truly inspirational and an amazing accomplishment. Some of the most fun bits were her memories of her world tours and concerts (The Claw!) and how she prepared for a live performance. Overall I was curious to learn more about Tina Turner and am not disappointed I spent this time with her.
