Technically, you don't need to read the other three books before reading this one, but in general, it helps you to understand the politics a bit if you do. This was great, and I was holding my breath through the entire last quarter of the book. I loved our MC. She was so great, unassuming, but also daring and honest. Good stuff.

This book just wasn't for me. I found it extremely forgettable. Not poorly written or anything, but when I recount the plot, I couldn't tell you how they managed to stretch out the story for almost 500 pages.
Hmmmm, right now I feel there are diminishing returns on books set in this universe. There were occasional references to what occurred in the original trilogy of novels and I just wanted to go back to that storyline (AIs wanting to be recognised as independent beings).

A fun story in the Radchaai universe. Full of political intrigue and ‘humanity’. Felt like the author was trying to do too much in the last quarter of the book, like the plot was a little busy. Still liked it a lot! The narrator did a great job with different voices and accents to differentiate the characters.

In een maatschappij waar heel grote waarde wordt gehecht aan relikwieën (niet van religieuze aard, denk aan een menu van een etentje lang geleden waar een van je voorouders bij aanwezig was) probeert een dochter uit een belangrijke familie haar (pleeg)moeder te overtuigen van haar waarde middels een niet zo goed doordachte actie. Dat, gecombineerd met een aantal alien-soorten die niet veel goeds van plan zijn, geeft weer een gezonde dosis "space opera".
