Gillian Flynn

3.55 AVERAGE

3.5 stars.

Enjoyable but nothing special, it certainly could have been if Flynn had turned the concept into a novel and created a more suspenseful atmosphere. Concept was interesting, though I found the ambiguous ending very gimmicky.

Flynn's books are a bit hit and miss for me, so my expectations for this one weren't soaring. I am happy to say that I was pleasantly surprised. The Grownup is a very short little book, really just a story, but it was well-written and clever, and I kept turning the pages eager to know what would happen next. Maybe I'm scared easily, but in fairly few pages, Flynn really managed to create a creepy atmosphere that lingered until the clever end. I'm not usually a fan of short stories, but I'd read more by Flynn, if she writes them!

my first read by Gillian Flynn and it absolutely wont be my last. This made me laugh at least ten different times. main character is likable and honestly relatable as hell.

Could be better, could be worse. Gets the job done and even sanitises after

This story takes a couple of interesting turns, and unlike many other reviewers I liked the open ending. My biggest frustration with the narration is that it relies on some really tired and shitty stereotypes about sex workers (for example that they’re lazy and deceptive). It seeeems like Flynn was trying to give us a different kind of sex worker character, but it’s a real miss. Sex work is work, and I’d love to see a story with a sex worker protagonist whose not either victimized or victimizer.
