Okay. I DNFed this book back in March and had nothing to read so I picked it up again.
This book was BORING!

This is definitely for younger readers than me but going back and rereading it, I still absolutely loved this book! The link to the Cottingly fairies is odd (as it implies that both them and the girl in the letters exist in this canon, rather than the story being a complete retelling of the real event, as I'd misremembered) and I also found one of the plotlines very predictable, as I remember thinking when I first read the book. However, aside from that plotline, the story does have some twists and turns as well as still holding up to that spirit of exploration and wonder I remember it having as a kid.

A lot is combined in this middle grade- the difficulties of having a relative in hospital under intensive care, grief, a historical fiction story set against the modern day, and fairies.
I have always been a bit of a fairies girl, so it goes without saying that I enjoyed this.

Emma Carroll can do no wrong in my eyes! I absolutely love her books and devour them! Her writing is so easy to read and incredibly imaginative. I highly recommend this book!

I was expecting more fairies and interactions with them. In this story, the fairies are more of a back-drop to a more deeper and emotional plot point. The ending was bittersweet, but left me more depressed than happy.

I could see where the author was going with this, but I was expecting fantastical and fun elements. Instead, it was dreary and full of melancholy. I gave it 3 stars because the story was good, but I wanted it to end sooner than it did.
